Selective Invertebrate Training
Klein-Edwards Professional Services
To assist larger companies and their staff we can provide one of the field training visits as an in-house introduction to show staff photos of the butterfly, mounted specimens, photos of habitats and basically do a 2-3 hour presentation of the species.  The remaining sessions will be in the field looking at types of habitats, similar species and note how they are different and hopefully see the butterfly.

We can also add a role of Technical Advisor to periodically check on your field personnel to ensure they are conducting field searches properly, etc.  We can provide Project Level Technical Consultation.  Examples would be: we could look at the project and consult on where potential dispersal of Hermes Copper Butterflies (Lycaena hermes) might occur or ensure monitoring requirements might need to include complete life cycle of particular federally endangered butterflies.

Are offering selective butterfly TRAINING on Quino checkerspot, Laguna Mountains Skipper, Hermes Copper, Thorne's Hairstreak, Harbison's Dun skipper and Wandering skipper.  Training will be approximately 5 - 6 weeks each where we will cover habitat requirements, butterfly biology, ecology of the butterfly along with reading assignments.  You might be able to gather some of your field time for your federal permit for the Quino Checkerspot and Laguna Mountains Skipper.

For field training of the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly and Laguna Mountains Skipper you MUST first pass the required identification test by the FWS. We will not allow any participants take the field training until they have passed that test. That said, we do offer training to prepare for the FWS identification test. We will cover how the test is given what you need to do to pass, go over physical characteristics of the key butterflies that would be confused with the species being tested on, and go over other butterflies that could show up on the test. The training takes approximately 2-2.5 hours. If you do not pass on the first round and you set up a re-test with the Service there is no additional fee for that year.  As the Service's requirement, you are allowed to re-test once if you do not pass the first time.  If you do not pass the second time you must wait one year before you can retake the test.

Cost per person is $150.
Cost is $1,000 per person for each species.  Go to our Store page and sign up for these or contact us.
Once you have passed the Service's test and you wish to take the field training program for Quino or Laguna Mountains Skipper then we can set up time for these.  However, we have also mentioned above four other butterflies that will not require the FWS testing and we can set up field training for these.

Those of you that have worked with us in the field can acknowledge that you thought you knew the butterfly. But after one day with us you came to the realization you did not
know the butterfly.  We are here to make you more efficent and  confident.
Other sensitive insects and invertebrates are found within the southwest and future trainings will be added. So keep watching our website for programs and classes. If however, you have immediate needs for an impending projects and you are unable to find subconsulting staff to assist you, let us know and we will do our best to assist with your needs by training some of your staff to make them more proficient.
