Bird Training
We offer field training for 1 sensitive species birds; coastal California gnatcatcher.
The coastal California gnatcatcher (CAGN) field training will consist of up to fifteen 4 hour sessions.  We teach you differences of habitats that these birds can be found in.  We will also talk about have you see differences in habitat densities.  We believe it is just as important to understand the biology and ecology of these birds as seeing the bird.  It is clear that observing the bird is very important because you need to understand their behavior and how they react to the habitats in which they live or pass through to suitable habitat to nest.  You will be required to read bird atlases within southern California, federal protocols, books on plant communities, and any recovery plans.  Then during the field training you will discuss your interpretation and understanding of reading and use that during field training time to have a stronger understanding of the bird.
You will discuss and hopefully see the differences between male and female CAGN as well as young and disbursing young in post breeding dispersal.  You will also discuss habitat differences between regions in Southern California such as coast sage scrub, Diegan sage scrub, Riversidian sage scrub, Venturean sage scrub, etc.  You will also learn about elevational variations as well as vocalization and hear and discuss similar sounding birds and how their vocalization is different from a CAGN.
Cost for CAGN Field Training will be $1,500 per person.
